Frequently Asked Questions for Authors

Are you a subsidy publisher?

No.  We are a traditional publisher who has chosen to publish our books in a print on demand manner.  When we contract a book for publication, we pay a small advance and pay royalties.

Do you publish all books in paperback and electronic formats?

At this time paperback books will be solicited by invitation only.  General submissions are currently for electronic format only.

Do you charge to read, edit, or publish manuscripts?

All submissions sent to us are read and considered for publication free of charge.  If a contract is offered and signed, Echelon Press is responsible for editing and publishing the book.  There is no financial obligation on the part of the author for any of these services.

*If a publisher requests or demands money for these services, it is in your best interest to research them carefully as they may be subsidy or vanity press publishers.   These are not illegal, but often do not require a high enough standard of quality.

Do you accept proposals or submissions via e-mail or fax?

We do not under any circumstances accept proposals or submissions via fax. As per our guidelines, queries may be sent in the body of an email, but submissions must be done via US Postal mail.  In very rare instances we may request an author to submit via e-mail. Under NO circumstances do we accept unsolicited e-mail attachments.

What percent royalties do you pay?

Our royalty rates are discussed on a per author basis and are not available to the general public.  We offer this information when a manuscript is being considered for contract.

Do you have a 'right of first refusal' clause in your contract?

No.  We believe an author should be able to publish wherever they feel best suits their needs and publishing credits.  While we absolutely welcome authors' subsequent works, we do not demand them.

Do you do reprints of out-of-print books?

Yes.  For previously published works where the author holds all rights to the work, we can put the title in electronic formats.  In some cases, we can additionally put the title into trade size paperback.  Decisions are made on a case by case basis. All submitted manuscripts will be subject to editing.

I have a title in print right now, but I still hold the electronic rights.  Can you publish it in electronic formats only?

In most cases, yes.

I have a title currently in e-book formats, but I still hold the print rights.  Can you put it into print?

This is a rare circumstance, but all possibilities can be discussed.
